School Library Journal Review

PreS-K-A fast-paced, rhyming story with vibrant, bouncing illustrations. A toad begins the tale about a gob of bubble gum found on the road. Before long, the little creature gets stuck, is joined by a shrew, a goose, a bee, and a crow. A truck is zooming down the road so the only way out of this sticky predicament is to chew, chew, chew. That is just what the animals do until a bear comes by and more trouble seems imminent. Fortunately, it gets stuck, a hen comes along, and the adventure begins anew. Enjoyable and energetic, this repetitive tale is just the kind of wacky fun that young children love.-Andrea Tarr, Corona Public Library, CA (c) Copyright 2010. Booklist Review

PreS-Gr. 1. In this rollicking tale, a blob of pink bubble gum melting in the middle of the road causes big trouble for five animals that get stuck in the chewy-gooey icky-sticky mess. Wheeler's snappy rhyming verse, loaded with silly words and onomatopoeia, begs to be read aloud: Yuck! Ew! The Shrew's stuck, too! / Gooey shrew, gooey shrew / Pointy-nose-all-gluey shrew / Stomping, shouting \lquote FOOEY!' shrew / Can't get loose. The clever language is just part of the appeal of this well-designed picture book. Creative variations in size, style, and placement of text add visual excitement, as do the bold colors and patterns of Huliska-Beith's acrylic-and-fabric collage illustrations. Wildly exaggerated expressions and body language enhance the slapstick nature of the story and provide plot clues for pre-readers who are paging through on their own. --Lauren Peterson Copyright 2004 Booklist

Horn Book Review

Chewy-gooey bubble gum, / Icky-sticky bubble gum / Melting in the road."" This rollicking, tongue-twisting rhyme notes the progression of animals that get themselves stuck in the enticing pink puddle and then have to chew like mad so they can blow a communal bubble and lift above an oncoming truck. Bold acrylic paintings in summertime colors depict the whole delicious mess. (c) Copyright 2010. The Horn Book, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. No redistribution permitted. Kirkus Book Review

Maximum rhythm and maximum rhyme spin this story of sticky peril for an eclectic group of animals forced to learn the value of teamwork. "Bubble gum, / bubble gum, / Chewy-gooey bubble gum, / Icky-sticky bubble gum / Melting in the road. / Along comes a toad . . . /A fine, fat toad, / A fine, fat, wild / --SPLAT!-- / wart-backed toad." The gummy toad is joined in the pink slurry mess by a rude shrew, a wide white goose, an old crow, and a bumblebee. An on-coming truck then threatens the fighting fivesome! What do they do? They chew and chew! And their joint bubble floats them to safety. Wheeler has written another silly winner that toddlers will beg for again and again at storytime. Huliska-Beith's illustrations in acrylic, cloth, and paper are bright and wacky in this sweet collaboration. (Picture book. 2-6) Copyright ©Kirkus Reviews, used with permission.
