"The Convention of Zonta Clubs was formed in Buffalo, New York, USA in 1919. Mary E. Jenkins was the first president. The Zonta colours and emblem were adopted in 1920 and the first issue of The Zontian was published. The word ZONTA is derived from a Lakota Sioux word meaning 'honest' and 'trustworthy.' In 1923 the first international project was funded to care for 115,000 orphan children and women in Smyrna, Turkey, although the Zonta International Foundation was not established until 1984. In 1930 the name Zonta International was adopted as the first European club had been established in Vienna, Austria. Zonta International has 30,000 members, 1160 clubs in 66 countries working together to improve the lives of women and girls."--Back cover.
