Library Journal Review

These days, the travel sections of bookstores and libraries are so full that it's difficult for most writers to distinguish themselves. Stevenson, a professional travel writer who spent four months bopping around New Zealand, blends anthropological, biological, and practical observations for an irresistible read. He covers the rural and urban sections of both islands as well as national parks, ably describing the array of travel enthusiasts and native characters he encounters. Throughout, his writing is engaging without being cloying. People who enjoy travel writing for its own sake will like this, and those seeking "on the ground" information about New Zealand will also find it useful. For larger public libraries.--David S. Booklist Review

That this Canadian author is an expert traveler is obvious in his selection of travel destinations and modes: in this instance, a four-month backpacking trip through New Zealand. Stevenson has elevated "traveling light" to an art form; and his natural intrepidness, partnered with good writing skills, means that the reader is treated to some wonderfully told stories. From snowfalls to seasickness, from swimming with dolphins to the ultimate pleasure of having accomplished something major, the author remembers incidents and people, both enjoyable and not, with clear detail. His journey also took him inward to learn lessons about himself in times of trouble or triumph. For all armchair travelers. --Brad Hooper
