CHOICE Review

McLean (Univ. of Auckland) provides the first comprehensive, accurate overview of the songs, dances, and instrumental music of the Maori. Readers may wish to use this volume together with its companion, Traditional Songs of the Maori, comp. by McLean and Margaret Orbell (Wellington, New Zealand, 1975; rev. ed., Auckland, 1990), an anthology of musical transcriptions supplemented with copious annotations. Here, McLean focuses on history, context, style, and performance practice. He understands that the Maori, like any other ethnic group, have a history, no matter how hard it may be to reconstruct, and he gives a surprisingly continuous picture of Maori music over the last few centuries. The author divides the volume into two sections. The first is concerned with song and dance styles, musical instruments, performance, ownership, and learning in a historical context. This segment ends with more than 30 pages of musical analysis of various vocal styles. The second half of the book explains and analyzes the impact of European music, especially hymns. Magnificently researched, well written, and thorough, Maori Music is the product of 30-plus years of scholarship and research in both the field and the library by the leading authority on this subject. All academic collections. G. Groemer; Earlham College
