Enhanced descriptions from Syndetics:

A thorough, well illustrated account of the Huddart Parker Line ships that ferried passengers and freight across the Tasman Sea between New Zealand and Australia, focusing on the famous Wanganella, with coverage of other well known ships such as the Monowai and Elingamite. The Wanganella was launched in December 1929 and operated between New Zealand and Australia until 1962, apart from a period of service as an Australian hospital ship during the Second World War. From 1963 to 1970 the Wanganella was moored in Deep Cove, Doubtful Sound, and used as a hostel ship for nearly 300 workers building the Manapouri tailrace tunnel and power station. Peter Plowman is a long time maritime researcher and author.
