SECRETS NEVER DIE

Alex Aaro has spent most of his life on the run from his Ukrainian mafia family. But when he learns that crazy Aunt Tonya, the only relative who ever gave a damn about him, is dying, he risks returning home to say goodbye. He's prepared for anything except the call from his friend, Bruno Ranieri, that sends him on a wild and dangerous ride with a mysterious woman who holds a deadly secret and a white hot passion that binds them together.

Social worker Nina Christie has no idea how much trouble she's in when her Aunt Helga shows up bleeding at her shelter, babbling in Ukrainian--and with one inexplicable act thrusts Nina into the heart of a nightmare. Now a ruthless crime syndicate will stop at nothing to make Nina disappear, and only Alex Aaro, that inscrutable six-foot-four rock hard slab of lean muscle, stands between her and certain death. Now Nina and Alex are in a race against time, death, and their desire for one another...

Publishers Weekly Review

Bestseller McKenna tantalizes the reader with the ninth McCloud Brothers romantic suspense novel (after Blood and Fire). Nina Christie, a McCloud family friend, is attacked on a New York Street by an older Ukrainian acquaintance, who injects her with a mind-altering drug and records a distorted message on Nina's cellphone. Another McCloud friend, former Army ranger Alex Aaro, lands in New York City, hoping to visit his dying aunt without alerting his estranged Russian mob family. He has no time to translate the message for the McClouds and only goes to help Nina when four thugs sent by the mind-controlling villain track her down. The drug allows Nina to hear thoughts of those around her, but the translated message says she must find the antidote in three days or she will die. Well-developed main characters and a complicated, fast-paced plot help the book, but repetitive elements of mind-control, goon squads, and predictable sex scenes do little to distinguish this installment from others in the series. Booklist Review

When Nina Christie, who already has some psi powers, is injected with the A-dose of a super psi-enhancer drug by her dying friend, Helga, she becomes involved in a corrupt politician's scheme to get that drug and its corresponding B-dose for himself, making for McKenna's convoluted, action-filled plot. Nina winds up being rescued and eventually saved by Alex Aaro, a security consultant with a highly shielded psi talent himself, whose powers expand as his relationship with her deepens. They are pursued by the politician's heavies, one of whom includes Aaro's estranged brother, and by Annabel, an evil psi who uses her talents to probe others' minds against their will to secure intelligence. Ultimately, all the bad guys get theirs, and Aaro is reunited with Nina after being shot and finally extricating himself from his rotten family (explained in a subplot). Part thriller, part paranormal tale, and part sensual romance, McKenna's tale offers lots of explicit sex described with lots of gratuitous dirty words.--Chelton, Mary K. Copyright 2010 Booklist

Kirkus Book Review

Two damaged souls find each other and some surprising psychic gifts as they fight a string of enemies who want them dead--or worse. Alex Aaro has spent most of his life distancing himself from his Ukrainian Mafia roots but risks his freedom and new identity to fly back to NYC to say goodbye to his dying aunt, the only person on earth he loves. During his visit, his friend Bruno calls on him to help Nina, a woman who's been attacked and injected with an unknown drug. The only clues to the drug or its antidote are in a recording on Nina's cellphone in what seems to be Russian. At first antagonistic toward one another, Nina and Aaro must overcome their hostility to work together to thwart enemies new and old, especially once they realize that the drug is a ticking time bomb that leaves Nina dead in days if they don't find the answers they need. The drug is a psychic enhancer, and both Aaro and Nina become aware of psychic abilities they never understood they possessed. As their psychic powers strengthen, the journey grows more perilous and harrowing, and Nina and Aaro must lower their masks and place absolute trust in each other, something neither of them has ever done. Doing so cracks them open and creates a soul-deep bond of love, but will it be enough to save them, mind, body and spirit? This is McKenna's newest erotic romantic suspense with paranormal aspects--psychic powers and a shady underworld attached to the enhancing drug--and the book offers captivating characters, explosive action and sizzling sexual tension. The world she's set up is believable and intriguing, and despite some complex character and plot development, the story flows smoothly and with page-turning excitement and intensity. The book will appeal especially to romantic suspense fans, but anyone who likes good romance, great action and sexually intense situations will enjoy it. Avoid it if you dislike profanity--Aaro and many of the villainous secondary characters use bad language like table salt--or are offended by graphic descriptions of sex. McKenna fans will be happy to see secondary characters from other books in the McCloud series. With its action-packed plot hinged on an intriguing paranormal frame and a touching, red-hot romance, this is a great read for its intended audience.]] Copyright Kirkus Reviews, used with permission.
