Mates at the War is based on letters and diaries written between 1916 and 1919 by Riflemen D'Arcy Preston and Leslie Greenwood, two young men from Wanganui. The illustrations are from memorabilia of this period and line illustrations by Wanganui artist Joan Grehan, niece of both men.
