CHOICE Review

The title of this slender book accurately suggests the breadth of its content. It does indeed "examine the boundaries between the model and artist as well as consider the issues of gender and representation." In addition it reviews formal studies in life drawing that are part of the specialized education of serious art students. The focus of such ambitious objectives is wisely limited to New Zealand. (One could, however, easily extrapolate the findings of the book to other English-speaking countries, as well as to northern European countries from the Victorian era to the present!) More than 80 drawings are reproduced in the book; in addition, boxed and highlighted quotations from models, students, and instructors support the text. The evolution of contemporary attitudes--from Victorian sensibilities, which often equated the model to a prostitute, to a 1970s feminist awareness focused on the individual model as an unclothed person posed uncomfortably for extended periods of time--is delineated in sharp clarity. Chesterman provides a review of figure drawing in New Zealand notable for its clarity and freedom from bias. ^BSumming Up: Recommended. General readers; upper-division undergraduates. J. H.
