A murder in a country town is the backdrop for the story of three young people, Alice, Tom and Jonty, who are bound together because Alice's mother was murdered and Jonty is the suspect. This is a compulsive read from master storyteller Maureen McCarthy.

Booklist Review

Three years have passed since Alice's mother, Lillian, was murdered, yet the mystery behind her death is still unsolved. Her cousin Jonty, originally imprisoned for her murder, has been released, and his best friend, Tom, has reappeared to complete an internship with the local paper. Both young men had a close relationship with Lillian, much to Alice's frustration and jealousy, and as the story unfolds, both come under Alice's intense scrutiny, even suspicion. McCarthy's characters are dark and intense, and her novel is as rambling and expansive as the Australia of which she writes. Even in death, Lillian seems almost more vibrant than the threesome who mourns her, each in different ways. McCarthy slowly metes out clues to Lillian's final hours while also weaving tangential story lines involving Tom's parents, Alice's grandmother, and Jonty's father. This will be an interesting transition to adult fiction for many teens in search of longer, more involved, and less tightly constructed reading experiences than many YA titles offer.--Bradburn, Frances Copyright 2010 Booklist
