Enhanced descriptions from Syndetics:

"Take your yarn for a walk," says author Jenny Dowde, who teaches the freeform "scrumbling" technique. With scrumbling, needleworkers can work unbound by patterns and yet still successfully knit or crochet a project. With just a range of simple stitches and only a few basic techniques, anyone can create lovely and useful household objects and eye-catching wearable art. Full-color photographs illustrate Dowde's methods in action, from completing both basic and advanced stitches to working with wires and beads, along with a host of special techniques, including constructing buttons, unusual closures, and special accents from polymer clay.

For experienced knitters and crocheters who like a challenge, the concept of scrumbling, ie working in a free-form manner, is easy to adapt to larger projects and to the creation of wearable art. There are many interesting special stitches that will help create unique fabrics. Also learn how to make individual buttons and closures.

Library Journal Review

Freeform crochet may have had its origin in the work of Sylvia Cosh and James Walters, who discussed in their Crochet Workbook what they termed doodling or scrumbling with myriad yarns to create a textured freeform fabric. Other fiber artists then began to extend the idea to knitting, and in 2002 Australian knitwear designer Prudence Mapstone self-published the first book on the topic, Freeform: Serendipitous Design Techniques for Knitting & Crochet. Dowde, another Aussie, now brings this exciting technique to a wider market of crocheters and knitters with a colorful book that combines instruction in freeform with a variety of inspirational projects that will appeal to intermediate and advanced skill levels. Highlights of the book include a chapter on colors and color interactions, practice sessions playing with the crocheted and knitted fragments, and a selection of projects including bags, shawls, hats, and scarves. Enthusiastically recommended for academic textile and public library collections. (c) Copyright 2010. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc.
