There’s a lot to investigate, from the disappearance of a family album to the theft of gold teeth from bodies at the crematorium. Library Journal Review

After two years of searching for employment, Maggy Garrisson finally lands a job as a secretary to a private detective. Her boss is a feckless drunk incapable of closing a case, and Maggy isn't much of a secretary, but her ingenuity, willingness to bend the rules, and self-destructive tendencies soon lead her to some success as an amateur, unlicensed detective. When Maggy's boss is savagely beaten by thugs searching for information that they're hoping will point them to a huge sum of cash, steering clear of the situation doesn't enter her mind for a moment. Before long, she's caught between crooked cops and the London underworld, and enamored of an unemployed technical engineer-turned-mob enforcer. The script, by the prolific, award-winning Trondheim (Dungeon), offers plenty of twists and turns, but the real fun here is spending time with Maggy--an acerbic, cynical, clever, energetic, deeply flawed, and enormously charming protagonist. VERDICT Moody, modern noir stories are a dime a dozen, but Trondheim's knack for characterization and the wonderfully detailed and vividly colored illustrations from Oiry (Through the Walls: Slightly Oversized) elevate this one above the rest.
