The development of lunar orbiters has afforded humans the opportunity to observe, for the first time, the rugged and cratered landscape of the far side of the moon. Byrne (formerly, systems engineer, Apollo Program for Lunar Orbiter Photography) has taken the best of the images, reprocessed them to remove the inevitable scanning defects, and assembled them into a magnificent atlas that illustrates this previously unknown land in exquisite detail. The atlas is divided into a number of chapters, each of which is introduced with an overview of a selected region, followed by detailed images and brief comments about significant features. Introductory chapters explain the current understanding of the history of the formation of the moon, and describe the lunar missions from which the images have been derived. A final chapter summarizes Byrne's ideas about how the large-scale lunar features were formed by two major impacts, the larger one preceding and displacing vast amounts of lunar surface material. Book and accompanying CD-ROM comprise an excellent reference of interest both to professionals and to laypersons who appreciate the intricate patterns and beauty of lunar topography.
