McCulloch, a writer, offers a guide or handbook of how to find and buy the contemporary art of the Aboriginal peoples of Australia. The guide is organized into geographical area, which helps to organize the material stylistically and makes it easier for a collector traveling in a region to focus on the sources of art there. These regions include the Central and Western Desert, the Kimberly, and Arnhem Land, with a shorter section on urban art. Each of the large areas is broken down into smaller centers of creativity such as Papunya, Kalumburu, Fitzroy Crossing, and Melville Island. Each of these centers of creativity is described in a brief introduction followed by a list of artists in the area, "Where to See and Buy the Art," and recommended reading. The final chapter is a buyer's guide, followed by an extensive directory of galleries and dealers with addresses, phone numbers, and e-mail addresses. There is a lengthy bibliography of sources on contemporary Aboriginal art and a detailed index. Numerous high-quality four-color illustrations of art works. General readers; undergraduates. C. D.
