Booklist Review

A veteran author of historical romances, Matthews offers another heartwarming, deftly plotted book, set this time in late-nineteenth-century Britain. Although 20-year-old Gertrude Melrose is the apple of her father's eye, her mother worries that she'll end up a spinster. But her parents soon have bigger problems when they learn that their son, Edward, has gambled away not only his inheritance but most of the family fortune as well. He is immediately disowned and sent away in disgrace. Gertie is grief-stricken and guilt-ridden; she doesn't even mind that her family has lost their home and her father has lost his business. All she wants is to know that Edward is safe. But the only person who can help is Alexander Glendale, an old family friend and a contender for Gertie's hand in marriage but someone she inexplicably loathes. Although the ending is predictable, this is still a charming, feel-good story that's as satisfying as hot cocoa and a warm fire on a cold winter's day.--Melton, Emily Copyright 2009 Booklist
