Enhanced descriptions from Syndetics:

Prohibition: Booze and blood run across the snows of northern Montana. Wolf Point has turned into a bloody battleground for control of illegal bootleg booze being smuggled in from Canada. The shooting death of the police chief and sheriff, robbing the bank and shooting up the town are grounds for resignation of the entire police force. Andy Larson, the temporary sheriff, must deal with the new police chief who brought his own police force from the east. A bootleg distribution point is littered with dead bodies and shot-up cases of whiskey. A boxcar of whiskey is blown up. A biplane is used to bring in booze. Is the new chief head of a bootleg gang? Is Sheriff Larson up for the challenge?

Soon after Andy Larson takes a deputy sheriff position in the town of Wolf Point, Montana, the sheriff is murdered and the bank is robbed, and Andy is left to bring down a corrupt police force and a bootlegging organization.

Booklist Review

Andy Larson, who first appeared in the cop-stealing-from-bad-guys caper, Curse of Al Capone's Gold (2008), drifts to northern Montana in this fusion western featuring booze-running gangsters who wield Tommy guns. Andy becomes temporary county sheriff when his boss is cut down at a farmhouse out in the cold country. The crime scene is packed with dead gangsters seemingly at cross-purposes, and Andy wonders if rival gangs are at work, and if one of those gangs is headed by little Wolf Point's new police chief. He solves the mystery of where the booze is coming from with a ruse that draws in an old cohort, Wild Bill Bohlin. Bohlin flies the stuff in from Canada, after which trucks carry it to Denver. Andy's a blunt fellow, and none of Thompson's minor characters escapes stereotyping, except Bohlin, whose flying skills, acquired over the battlefields of France, ring true. Certainly Thompson conveys the bone-deep cold of a Montana winter, and his climactic pages, in which his several teams of bad guys double-cross one another, are almost comically entertaining.--Mort, John Copyright 2014 Booklist
