Booklist Review

Here are six western stories, published between 1937 and 1948, that spotlight Dawson's use of action and setting. An aging marshal determines to bring down an unscrupulous rancher; a lone stranger squares off against a crooked town; a young man risks his life to avenge his father's murder timeless themes but presented with sharply drawn characters and enlivened by vivid, economical descriptions ( Montana lunged sideways, his hand sweeping downward and rising in a blasting stab of flame ). Dawson's real name was Jonathan Hurff Glidden; his brother, Frederick Dilley Glidden, also wrote western fiction using the name Luke Short. Peter Dawson isn't as well known as his brother, but he ought to be. In his novels and short stories, he displays a nimble writing style and an ability to keep the genre's well-worn themes fresh. An engaging and somewhat neglected writer who deserves a wider audience.--Pitt, David Copyright 2010 Booklist
